The weather was one for the birds. (Wolan)

Coach’s Game Analysis:
Weather and Field Conditions:
Cloudy, high 79. Winds were blowing into LF. The wind was strong enough to whip around the infield dirt into LF. Infield conditions were fine otherwise.
By around the 2nd inning, a light drizzle started, which persisted for the rest of the game. It was enough to soak anything that wasn’t covered, and made the outfield a bit slick. As for the infield, it kept the dirt from blowing around, but did not make it muddy.
Defense:
- | Infield starters of Kevin (3B), Cottam (SS) and Wiley (1B) were solid. Still need to work on infield chemistry with 2B.
|
- | Our defense in LF was shaky at best. Most of D.R.’s hits were into LF. Per Russ, 7-10 runs could have been prevented if we’d had better coverage in that area of the field. |
Game Highlights:
Memorable Events:
- | Was the first game in Verdasys Softball history where the team played a game with a continuous drizzle. |
- | One D.R. batter hit a fly ball that hit the RF fence while in the air. |
- | As 2B, Heather stopped a groundball with her foot and kicked it in the air. Was unable to make play to 1B. |
- | Début game for: Kristen Foresto. (Played catcher until a 4th woman player arrived.) |
Offense:
Jon: | 3 for 3 (3B) with 1 RBI, 1 runs score and 2 bases taken. |
Cottam: | 2 for 3 (2B, 3B) with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. |
Wiley: | 2 for 3 (2B) with 2 RBIs and 1 run score. |
Lucy: | 1 for 3 (3B, FC) with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. |
Defense:
Spears: | running behind the head catch of a flair behind 1B. (1st) |
Lucy: | line-drive catch in RCF. (2nd) |
McCauley: | line-drive snag at 3B. (2nd) |
Verdasys: | 6-3 double play (grounder to Cottam, unassisted out at 2nd, followed by put-out at 1B to Spears.) (3rd) |
D.R.: | tagged-out Foresto at home plate as he tried to score on a Cottam 3B. |
Melissa: | catch of a pop-up behind home plate (P2) in the 6th. |
D.R.: | 4 shut-out innings, including 3 1-2-3 innings. |
Milestones:
- | Lucy P. becomes the second female player in club history to hit a triple. (Other player was Colby back in 2010-Game 7.) |
Injuries:
Priore: | hit in the shin by a grounder. |
Heather: | got struck in the foot and shin by 2 separate grounders. |
A-WOL Watch:
Did not have a lot of energy in me while playing this game. Need to take Vitamin B or drink some coffee before the game to perk up.
Offense:
1 for 2 (SAC) with 1 run and 1 RBI.
- | Narrowly outran grounder to 3B for infield base hit. (Short bat.) Play at 1B was a tie. Narrowly scored on Cottam’s double. (Walked to 2B on fly ball; raced to home when ball was dropped.) Play at plate was a tie. (Was tagged as I crossed the plate up-right. Would have been a clear score if I slid.) |
- | Pop-up to foul territory behind 3B. (Short bat.) Ball hit handle. |
- | Place-hit ball into RCF for a SAC RBI. (Longer bat.) |
Defense:
Played FOF (LF) and RF. One touch, no outs.
- | As FOF (LF), had to give up chase of fly ball to prevent collision with Priore in LF. (1st) |
- | Later, had a fly ball that bounced off the top of my glove and then behind me. Need to do a better job at getting behind ball to make play. Possible that wind might have gotten ball. (2nd) |
- | As RF, no touches. |
